SAN DIEGO – Carnival Cruise Lines on Thursday announced plans to home port a cruise ship in San Diego in the spring, a decision that officials say will boost tourism spending in the region.
The move will launch San Diego's first year-round cruise schedule, with the 2,052-passenger ship Elation offering four- and five-day voyages to Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada starting in June.
“This is something we've been working on for 20 years, developing our cruise facilities to the point it will become a West Coast destination for tourists and residents alike,” said Irene McCormack, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Unified Port District.
Carnival officials estimate having the ship based here will bring $250 million in spending to the local economy each year........
