Inside Passage Ports - Renting a Car?

    Hi All,

We will be going on our first Alaska cruise in June. I have been doing some research on shore excursions in our ports of call (Skagway, Ketchickan, Juneau and Victoria). Unfortunately, we need to keep the costs of this trip low, so some of the fabulous shore excursions are not in our budget. I have been considering renting a car at some, if not all, of the ports in Alaska and checking out the sights on our own. I would really appreciate any input from those who have done this. ...or those who enjoyed some of the less expensive excursions.

We are renting a car in Skagway in June. I have read he drive to Emerald Lake is very scenic, and we have printed out Yukon's guide. I reserved our care back in December. I rented through Avis.

    Hi K,

Thanks for your post. I have also decided to rent a car in Skagway. I am a little hesitant to go too far into the wilderness in case we have car trouble and miss the ship, but I think we will "live on the edge" and take a responsible chance. What is Yukon's guide? If it is something I could find on the web, I would appreciate the link.

What do you plan to do in Ketchican and Juneau?

    Thanks!

Yukon's guide is at http://www.explorenorth.com/library/...e-photos1.html - I update it regularly, most recently yesterday. Have a great trip!

Re: Inside Passage Ports - Renting a Car?

Two years ago we took the princess cruise to Alaska. In Skagway we decided to rent a car which cost us $69 for the whole day. We checked into the cost of 4 of us to take the train adventure(white rail pass) and it would have cost us $320. The car route basically followed the same area the train was on. You can't get lost, not a lot of roads in Alaska. It was the smartest thing we did, ended up at Emerald lake. Stopped at all the fun places along the way, something you can't do on the train. I rented a car over the internet in Skagway, get off the ship and its walking distance away. Very nice people at the car rental, can tell you anything you want to know and how to get any place you want to be.
