Tuesday's National Weather
Severe threat for northern Midwest Kevin Roth, Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel Jul. 27, 2010 5:36 am ET Midwest Severe thunderstorms are possible from northwest Michigan and northern Wisconsin through Minnesota to eastern North Dakota and the eastern half of South Dakota today. Damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes are possible with the strongest thunderstorms. The most likely time for the severe storms is between 2pm and 10pm this afternoon and evening. Other non-severe thunderstorms should be scattered about southern Ohio, central and southern Indiana, central and southern Illinois, all but northwestern Missouri and Kentucky today. These storms have the potential of producing blinding rainfall and flash flooding. The remainder of the region should be dry with sunny to partly cloudy skies. High temperatures range from the upper 70s to middle 80s in North Dakota, northern Minnesota and northern Michigan to the middle 80s to middle 90s over the remainder of the region. Areas of western Nebraska and western Kansas could reach 95 to 100 degrees. South Thunderous cloudbursts are possible over much of the region today. Rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour and frequent lightning are expected with the thunderstorm activity. The heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding. Some of the stronger storms could also produce strong, gusty winds and some small hail. The only areas with a totally dry forecast are western Oklahoma and western Texas. High temperatures should generally be in the middle 80s to middle 90s, although readings of 95 to 100 degrees are possible in southwestern South Carolina, southern Georgia, southeastern Alabama and northern Florida. Northeast Most of the region enjoys another sunny and warm day with low humidity levels today. High pressure should keep it nice with high temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to middle 80s from northern New England southwestward through central and western New York to western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Warmer readings are expected from southern New England southward through eastern Virginia. Afternoon highs there should be in the middle 80s to lower 90s. Shower and thunderstorm activity should be confined to southern West Virginia and southwestern and south-central Virginia. Some of the storms produce very heavy rainfall which could lead to localized flooding, especially during the afternoon and evening. West Typical summer weather continues across the region with isolated to scattered thunderstorms occurring around the mountains, the low clouds, fog and haze occurring along the coast and the hot temperatures. Once again today showers and thunderstorms should develop around the mountains during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Today the activity should occur near the mountains in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. Later in the day they roll off the mountains into the surrounding valleys. Once the sun sets they begin weakening and raining themselves out. Storms that for in western Utah, Nevada, Oregon and a small portion of western Idaho should be dry thunderstorms. They contain plenty of lightning and occasionally produce strong and gusty winds, but have very little, if any rain. Most of the rain that falls from these storms evaporates before it reaches the ground. The big hazard from these storms beside the strong winds is the lightning that can trigger a wild fire. Temperatures across the region should range from the 60s at the coast to a 100 to 110 degree range in the deserts. Temperatures in interior valleys from Oregon and Washington to Utah and Colorado should reach the middle and upper 90s this afternoon. A few areas in those valleys could approach 100 degrees.
