How long have you gone before redeeming your future cruise credits if you have them?
I ask because………I have a question about those future cruise bookings you make while on a cruise. You know the ones, you can book a future cruise not knowing when or what ship you’ll be on and you get a tremendous deal on deposits and sometimes on cabin credits…..
Well, in April 2008 we booked a future cruise on a Princess ship while we sailed on the Caribbean Princess. The year before we booked a future cruise on an RCCL ship, while on the Mariner of the Seas.
Well, several years go by and cruises have come and gone and life got in the way and we had not used these “ghost bookings” as some people call them.
The RCCL future booking doesn’t have an expire date, but the Princess one does (4 years and it has to be 4 years SAILED not 4 years BOOKED). Anyhow……as the expire date grows near (April 8, 2012) I have some serious shopping to do! Oh darn!
Because we are extremely interested in the new Oasis/Allure of the Seas on RCCL, we looked there first. We found a cruise that leaves in less time than is required for the final payment, so we decide to use the credit and pay the final payment within just a couple of days for us. I know, this didn’t really save us any money but I felt like this future cruise credit could get lost in the paperwork if we delayed it any longer. So, off we are on the Allure of the Seas for its Western itinerary: Labadee, Haiti; Falmouth, Jamaica and Cozumel, Mexico. Looking forward to the new ports of Labadee and Falmouth for us. In fact, we already booked an excursion for my husband on the Dragon’s Breath Zip Line!
The next cruise we booked, is the Crown Princess. This is the one that we had to use or lose by 4/8/12……again, we couldn’t BEGIN our cruise on that date, it had to end BEFORE that date.
Anyhow……I began looking because I have some restrictions with my work that prevent me from traveling at certain times of the year, and no, I’m not a teacher or educator.
I found that we could go on the Crown Princess to Curacao and Aruba (and Princess Cays) the week before Xmas this year for a very reasonable price………so we booked that yesterday!
I’m not sure if or when we’ll utilize the future cruise credit program on another ship/cruiseline as in one case it didn’t help us and in another it does…….. I’m referring to making a deposit or not. The future cruise credit worked as a deposit on Princess because it was so far out, but on RCCL it didn’t work out because our cruise final payment date was 1 or 2 days away from the date we decided to book the cruise…….so, live and learn I guess. I feel on both cruises we got a good deal and plus, our wonderful TA said if the pricing goes down, she'd find us those rates.......can't ask for anything more!
