Re: Ok you experienced Med cruisers

Hooked, I hope there are some sea days in between the port days, otherwise you’ll be exhausted. There will in general be very long days as there is so much to see.

Ok, here are some of my suggestions for a few of those port of calls.
You have to remember I am from Europe so there might be different things that should be on your “must do” list as an American.

    Barcelona

The “son of the city” is Antoni Gaudi, an architect with his own style, to say the least. One impressive piece is the unfinished church Sagrada Familia and the nice Park Güell.
If you like art you may want to visit the museums of Picasso (I have not been there myself yet) and Miro.
La Rambla is an area between two streets with a lot of restaurants and outdoor shops. There are also a lot of living statues (give them a coin and see what happens).

    Marseille

I have not spent so long time in this city but a nice place is Vieux Port (the old harbor) and the view from around the church Notre Dame de la Garde is really impressive. The palace Longchamp with it's fountain was also a very nice, relaxing place in the middle of city.

    Livorno/Florence

If you have to choose between Pisa and Florence, my advice is to choose Florence (but it’s easy for me to say so as I have already seen the Leaning Tower in Pisa, which was a nice experience too). It may be possible to see both during a day. In Pisa the only thing really to see is the Field of Miracles with the Leaning Tower.
In Florence on the other hand – what is there NOT to see…? Just to walk around in the (relatively small) old city center is a very nice way to get to learn this city. You have for example the old bridge (Ponte Vecchio) and the impressive cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore). There are a lot of exclusive boutiques and jewelry stores as well as other buildings. From the Michelangelo Square you have a nice view of the city. I have only spent a couple of hours in Florence but am aiming for a full day during my Med cruise in October.

    Civitavecchia/Rome

Here you’ll have to choose wisely. During a day you won’t be able to see everything there is to see.
“Must see” would according to me be the St Peter’s Church with the Sistine Chapel and also Colosseum (at least from the outside). Nice would also be Forum Romanum, the Spanish Steps and Fontana Di Trevi (both these last may be a bit “touristic”). There are historic buildings and pieces of art everywhere in the historic city center.

    Venice

(Sorry, no photos as I didn’t have a digital camera back in 1999 – and my photo album is… somewhere…).

It’s very nice just to stroll around in the city, on the narrow walkways. St Marc Square, with all the Pigeons, is not to be missed. Here you also can see the church of St Marc and the Campanile. There are also lots of palaces, like the Palazzo Ducale close to the St Marc Square, with the “bridge of sighs”.
You also would want to see the Rialto Bridge and maybe take a boat trip on Canal Grande.
I have just spent a couple of hours in Venice so I’m sure there are some more “must see” things there. Be prepared not to be the only tourist…

That was what I first could come up with for some of the ports. If there are some things I missed I’ll be back.
I'm sure we have a bunch of other C@'s with experience from the Med. I hope they can give you more ideas about what to see.

I agree about all of the ports.....great to see and do for a first time, but man.....you'll need a vacation from your vacation. I've never been to the Med, but I've done cruises out of San Juan, PR and they are also port intensive. Glad you got a great deal and we hope you do a review when you get back!

We loved our Med cruise - but it was tiring! So much to see and do! We loved Ephesus in Kusadasi, and all the ports we visited. My favourite was Santorini with Mykonos a close second! Just enjoy it all and take in as much as you can!

Re: Ok you experienced Med cruisers

GIBRALTAR, GREAT BRITAIN - I can't help you here...haven't been...

    ALICANTE, SPAIN - I can't help you here...haven't been...

BARCELONA, SPAIN - Here's my "short list":
    1) La Sagrada Familia...See Funnel's photo...It is simply incredible...may be my favorite building in the world...Take a tour of the inside, then take the REAR elevator to the top and walk down.
    2) Parc Guell - Funnel's one photo does not do it enough justice...The best city park in the world...Gaudi must have been on acid...See the undulating mosaic benches, the pillared "marketplace", the lizard, etc.
    3) Casa Mila...A Gaudi apartment building...with a Gaudi Museum inside...make sure to go out on the roof...
    4) Casa Batllo...A private house by Gaudi...a masterpiece in weird...
    5) Las Ramblas...It's actually one wide street, but the center area is pedestrian only...an experience...
    6) The Barri Gotic and the Old Cathedral...narrow winding streets--the old part of the city...
    7) The Picasso Museum (in the Barri Gotic)...

If it's a one-day stop, that is about all you will have time for...but there is much more...

MARSEILLE (PROVENCE), FRANCE - We skipped Marseille and justy toured the smaller cities of the Provence--Arles, Nimes, Avignon, etc. You might want to book a tour...

FLORENCE/PISA (LIVORNO), ITALY - For a first timer, definitely visit Florence (The Duomo, Michaelangelo's David at the Galleria del Academia, the Uffizi, Palace of the Medicis, Ponte Vecchio...)... Subsequent visits--Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Volterra...Best Ice cream in the world--"Vivoli" in Florence...

ROME (CIVITAVECCHIA), ITALY - My short list:

    1) Piazza Navona --Fountain of the Four Rivers...my favorite spot in Rome...an incredible old piazza that the Romans used to flood and stage mock naval battles in...breathtaking
    2) Trevi Fountain (Famed for "Three coins...")
    3) Vatican...
    4) Coliseum
    5) Pantheon

If it's your first visit, consider a tour...especially with only one day to figure out your way around...a LICENSED guide (not all guides are licensed) can get you past the long lines at the Vatican...

ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT (FOR CAIRO & GIZA) - Alexandria itself is not that good...skip the Library...it is NOT the ancient wonder of the world but a modern library...There is a neat site with old Roman columns and Sphinxes and there is the old Roman Amphitheater...and the catacombs and not much else...We did a day here and the other day in Cairo/Giza...but the day here was not among our favorites...It's about a three hour ride to Cairo...You may consider spending the night off the ship in Cairo to get the most out of your visit...In Cairo/Giza, of course, are the Pyramids and Sphinx...We also went to Sakarra to see the ancient "Step Pyramid" and to Ancient Memphis...With two days, you can also fit in the Egypt Museum with all of the great ancient artifacts...If you do spend the overnight, there is a laser show at the pyramids in the evening...Good restaurant--Falfala, across from the Pyramids

MYKONOS, GREECE - A small, laid back island...we just walked around town, walked up to the Windmills and did a little shopping and eating...

ISTANBUL, TURKEY--Just one day? Short list:
    1) Hagia Sophia--an Old Catholic Cathedral turned into a Mosque...
    2) Blue Mosque--an incredible Mosque
    3) Topkapi Palace--the old Royal Palace of the Ottoman Sultans
    4) The Grand Bazaar--A shopping and cultural experience bar none...
    5) The Spice Bazaar--
    6) The Cisterns--really! Underground water supply...it is eerie...

If you had more time, I would suggest a cruise up the Bosporus and a visit to the Dolambache Palace...But, with only one day, you will be stretched to see 1 through 5--at least they are all fairly close together in the Sultanhamet District...If you are on your own for lunch, I can recommend the "Pudding Shop"...Takes you back to the 60's and "Midnight Express"! DO NOT get snookered into a Carpet demonstration--high pressure sales...

KUSADASI, TURKEY (FOR EPHESUS) -- Definitely hire a PRIVATE tour here...I heartily recommend Ekol Travel...They've set up private tours for two for us for less money than the ship's excursions...With a long day, I'd recommend Miletus, Didyma and Ephesus...with a shorter day, just Ephesus...make sure to include the Terrace Houses...

ATHENS (PIRAEUS), GREECE - For a first timer, of course, the Parthenon and Acropolis...I'd take a tour--get a lot more in...Athens is big and congested...You can also add some sites off the Acropolis--like the Drive out to Cape Sounion...For a second visit, go to the Pelopennese--some incredible archaeological sites--Epidaurus, Mycenae, etc.

VENICE, ITALY - The town itself is the star...Take a Vaporetti (the public bus-boat) ride down the length of the Grand Canal, Tour the Doge's Palace (includes a walk across the Bridge of Sighs)...We really enjoyed the Synagogues Tour from the Museo Ebraico in the Ghetto (this is the original "Ghetto")...but mostly, just wander the town...If you have a long time here, I can recommend a visit to the charming island of Burano--but, if time is limited, may not be in the offing...Avoid the Glass Factory tours in Murano--another high pressure sales rip-off...

    Have fun...

Re: Ok you experienced Med cruisers

Plenty of good advice from BruinSteve!

In Barcelona you'll probably dock at Moll Adossat which is quite a walk to the city centre. There is some distance between the different sights.
Taxis should be easy to catch at the port. There is a hop-on-hop-off bus between the different sights called Bus Turistic. According to me not a bad option if you don't want to go on an excursion.
As BruinSteve said; make sure to go to Park Güell, it's a great park. I have more photos from there but you have to experience it yourself.

It's possible to take the regular train from Livorno to Florence but the train station is at quite some distance from the port so a taxi would be good. If you would like to go independent (not a guided tour) I would anyway suggest an "on your own" tour by Princess (if they have tours like that - RCI usually have), then you don't need to worry about the return to the ship and to go earler than necessary to have margin for late trains etc.

    /Erik
