Cruise ships visits are expected to hit record highs in both visits and numbers of passengers this year when the massive vessels deliver hundreds of thousands of tourists to Ogden Point, a deep water port facility located in the southwestern corner of the city of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Local merchants and government officials could not be happier about it too.
“We are projecting over 475,000 passengers,” said Rebecca Penz, Greater Victoria Harbour Authority communications manager. “We love the cruise ship business. It’s a very important part of our economy,” Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce CEO Bruce Carter said.
Greater Victoria tourist, service and supply businesses eagerly await the annual Alaska cruise ship season. Not only do visitors flood downtown Victoria and the region’s attractions, but a range of companies specializing in services, including ship repair and refits, count on cruise ship business.
A total of 229 visits are on the 2012 schedule, starting with the Crystal Serenity pulling in for an all-day visit on April 17. The final ship, Zaandam, is to arrive on Oct. 24.# Last year, 206 visits took place. The previous record for visits was set in 2009 at 220, according to the records of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, which runs Ogden Point.
