Tokyo Disneyland had been closed for five weeks following the quake due to power shortage caused by troubled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant.

10,000 people lined up as early as 6:30 a.m. - an hour and a half before the park opened - to be among the first back in the park. The park will close early, at 6:00 p.m. instead of 10:00 p.m., to conserve power.

The park's opening is an "upbeat message to the world," Hiroshi Mizohata, commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency, said at a briefing in Tokyo, Bloomberg reports.

That upbeat sentiment was echoed by parkgoers.

"We were so excited, we were almost crying," Tokyo Disneyland visitor Mika Hasegawa told CNN.

Oriental Land Company, which operates the Tokyo Disney Parks, will donate to the Japanese Red Cross 300 Yen ($3.60) for each visitor who visits the park between now and May 14.

The Disney complex's other park, Tokyo DisneySea, remains closed.
