Question about shore tours in Belize, Progresso, Cozumel

We are taking our 4th Carnival cruise in March on the Glory. I've been reading the posts here for several weeks and have learned alot new stuff. I am trying to decide what to do in these 3 ports. I am considering the Goff's Caye snorkeling tour or the Catamaran Snorkel & Key Beach break in Belize...the Passion Island tour in Cozumel (we did Chakanaab the last time here) and maybe the Kayak tour or just walking around in Progresso. We don't want to break the bank on shore tours either. Does anyone remember how much these tours were and have an opinion about any of them? And, do you really get hounded by merchants in Progresso if you walk around and hit the beach? (are there facilities at the beach there?)
I do prefer booking tours on the ship because we would be too nervous about a private tour company not getting us back in time. Thanks.

The Catamaran Snorkel & Beach Break at Rendezvous Key and Passion Island Adventure were $75.00 pp last October. (I don't know how often prices change on their excursions.) I can't tell you how good they were...as we didn't take them - I just still have my price sheet. The Caramaran one I've heard was lots of fun...I can't remember what I've heard about Passion Island. The Kayak Adventure was $69.00 pp. The only thing I remember hearing about that one was the it involved some work....but whoever I heard that from enjoyed it all the same.

We took other Carnival excursions when we were on the Glory last October...one I was on did get back 15 minutes after we were supposed to be on board already.

There were shops on the pier in Progresso that seemed very inexpensive compared to what I had seen elsewhere...unfortunately, that was the port we were late coming back to so there was no time to shop.

BELIZE CITY, BELIZE

City Walking and Shopping Tour

Price per person: $15.00

Duration: 2 hours

For the visitor who does not care to board a vehicle or a boat
to go on a tour
somewhere, but simply wants to see a little of the port, this
tour taken with
a walking guide will show you some of the flavor of old colonial
Belize within
a relatively short distance. And then, the shopping takes place
- there is the
National Handicraft Center or the Bazaar at the Memorial Park or
perhaps gifts
of gold or silver from downtown Belize City. NOTE: The tour
covers 7 to 8 city
blocks.

Mangrove Wonderlands and City Tour

Price per person: $45.00

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

A comfortable water taxi will start you off just right - into
the great
Haulover Creek at the bay's entrance, through Belize City, under 3 of
its
bridges; one bridge is so low that you better duck! Soon, you
will enter a
canopy of mangroves whose roots and odd shapes create a
cathedral-like atmos-
phere. Angry complaining King Fishers will zoom ahead, objecting
to the
invasion of their hunting turf. The herons will swoop off with a
nod of their
heads and a honk. Look out for the elusive Morelet's crocodile
or the land
based Coatimundi and iguana. Then, the boat breaks out of the
mangrove cathe-
drals and into the great Belize River where you will meet your
bus for a tour
of Belize City and shopping. Included: Air-conditioned buses;
bottled water.

City and Shopping Tour

Price per person: $28.00
Duration: 3 hours

Belize City is the grand lady of the colonial era of Belize when
the English
baymen decided to establish themselves firmly on the coast in
spite of
attempts by the Spaniards to dislodge them. Old wooden colonial
homes, mixed
in with modern cement structures and the narrow streets typical
of ports of
that day, combine to give the city a flavor that has attracted
many - it now
boasts a population of 70,000 people. Of course, the many
landmarks, such as
the 200 year old cathedral where Mosquito Kings were crowned,
the famous
lighthouse marking the grave of a Portuguese baron who left a
great deal of
his fortune to Belize, and others, are great attractions to
visitors. Shopping
is excellent. Included: Air-conditioned buses; guides; bottled
water.

Goff's Caye Snorkeling

Price per person: $48.00

Duration: 5 hours

Can this be Gilligan's Island, a mere 12-miles east of Belize
City? Well, it
is a little small, about half the size of a football field but a
magnificent
coral island complete with coconut trees and it sits right on
top of the great
barrier reef of Belize. The snorkeling from the island takes
place right from
the beach. Abundant reef life, great coral formations, crystal
clear water,
combined with wind and sun, and there you have paradise found!
Your guide will
take you on a snorkeling tour practically around most of the
island - you
may want to have that waterproof camera handy and ready.
Included: Snorkel
gear; bottled water.

Community Baboon Sanctuary

Price per person: $45.00

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

A number of farmers of the Belize District living in villages
with names like
Bermudian Landing and Lemonal, came together and with the
assistance of the
Audubon Society, created an excellent concept - the Community
Baboon Sanctuary.
Currently, Howler Monkeys live in a perfect habitat in the wild,
the riverine
forests of the fertile Belize River area. Prepared jungle paths
take the vis-
itor on a tour of the world of the Howler who often come down
near the ground
and may be feet away from your camera. Shy they are not and
quiet they cert-
ainly are not - their howling can be heard for miles. A great
wildlife tour!
Included: Air-conditioned buses; guides; bottled water.

Crooked Tree Wildlife Boat Tour

Price per person: $58.00
Duration: 6 hours

The Audubon Society once documented over 90 species of bird life
at this wild-
life reserve in one morning. This village is surrounded by a
lagoon with abun-

wildlife tour that
will also try to catch sight of crocodile, Howler and Spider
Monkeys, hawks,
herons, Northern Jacanas and the magnificent and endangered
Jabiru Stork, the
largest stork of the Americas, standing 5' tall with an 8' wing
span.
Included: Air-conditioned buses; guides; bottled water.

Canoe Exploration

Price per person; $55.00

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

After a short stint by road into the cashew wine land of the
Belize District
of Burrel Boom, grab your canoe and paddle up the Belize River
with its abun-
dant bird life, iguana, Howler and Spider Monkey and the
occasional manatee.
Look out for the rare and endangered Morelet's Crocodile (most
likely quite
small and shy) and enjoy the great combination of farmland and
rainforest
along the riverine areas of this important and historical river
which was
called the Rio Wallace by the invading Spaniards after a famous
English
captain of that name. The great Maya civilization used this
river as a main
passageway to the sea. Included: Guides; bottled water.

A very exciting addition to the golf excursion offerings is this
brand new
golf and country club located in Cozumel and just minutes away

18-hole golf
course. It was created by the Nicklaus design team and
incorporates the nat-
ural habitats of the island in its design and construction. This
course is
built around Cozumel's native trees, red mangroves and natural wetlands
in
order to preserve ecologically sensitive areas. There are only three
areas
on the golf course where golfers playing another hole are visible,

These prices seem very out of date to me. Altun Ha was this price 12/01/ Atlantis submarine I have recently seen listed at $79. Dolphin Encounter is up to over $100 directly thru Dolphin Discovery. Also, I have noticed that Carnival changes excursion prices at the drop of a hat. It appears to be based on how full the ship is at what price level. The more they discount the higher the excursion prices. Carnival is one of a few (only?) line not listing excursions online with prices. I know NCL and RCCI list with prices. Check out what they are offering and compare to board recommended private providers.
