Hello again...

I have a friend who lives on Cozumel so I sent her an e-mail to see what she had to say. One thing about the dolphin swims is that some folks think that since dolphins are creatures of the sea, they should not be held in captivity. Some Dolphin experiences have natural sea water tanks, basically holding areas that are connected to the ocean. The old Atlantita was that way before Hurricane Emily destroyed it back in 2005. Last time I was in Cozumel we actually went diving in the wreckage of Atlantita which is quickly becoming a man made reef. Dolphin Discovery in Chank has the same set up with real ocean water.

Others have salt water tanks that the dolphins swim in that are treated water, not connected to the ocean. Dolphinarius has just the tanks. My friend on Cozumel thinks the dolphin swim at Chank is a good one. So, if you're interested in the opinion of a local, here is her response to me.

"Earlier this year Dolphinaris opened their facility which is located about 200 meters SOUTH of where ATLANTIDA was….on the other side of Cozumel Palace. It does a lot of business but I personally don’t care for their facility. It’s very nice for visitors but they keep the dolphins in a saltwater tank sort of set up….even though they are located right on the water’s edge ~~ as a nature lover, diver and animal lover ~ I simply cannot support their activities. I do support Dolphin Discovery because of all the places I’ve seen ~ they are pretty decent in the space they provide the dolphins and the “down time†they ensure each animal. Plus, I constantly get letters from people telling me how their dolphin experience changed their lives, changed their perspective about the oceans or touched their life in some special way. So in my mind…in touching so many…. these captive dolphins sacrifice their freedom in order to give hope for better ocean conservation."

So there you have it. Hope that helps.
