Has anyone taken the train to London from Dover? We are staying in London three days after our Constellation cruise this summer and would like to take the train if we could manage our luggage. I called Britrail and they said you take your luggage on board with you. Thanks, Greg

Yes British Rail are correct you take your luggage with you. In Britain now there is no such luxury as a porter these days, so you will have to get a luggage trolly and wheel it to the train. Depending on the type(Model) of train (ie. old or new) there is a guards van so if you have a few cases they can be put in the guards van The trains usually go from Dover Western Docks station or sometimes from the main Dover station. to London (Victoria) station. Depending which hotel you are staying at you probably would be better getting a Black Taxi from Victoria Station to your hotel. There is what is called a semi-fast service which takes about one and half hours approximately and then there is a slow service (or stopping service) this stops at every station on the way to London and takes about three hours or more.

There is also an express coach service which runs from Dover to London Victoria Coach station. this would probably be cheaper (10 Pounds Sterling) and is not much different time wise to the semi-fast train service. This is quite a nice way to travel and see some of the Kent countryside at the sametime. The service runs from the Dover Cruise terminal. and also from the Town centre. If you pick the coach up from the Terminal then you wont have to handle you luggage too much

  3. Can only help with the luggage. We went from London To Harwich by train to board a cruise ship. Took our cases into the carriage with us as did about 100 fellow cruisers.
No problems. Everyone kept cases out of walkways. It was a much cheaper mode of transport than the cruise transfers. Was so busy talking to fellow passengers I forgot to look at the scenery.

Are you on the April 24, 2004 sailing of the Constellation? We are scheduling a car or van pickup at the dock in Diver as we are also spending time in london.

We anticipate having quite a bit of luggage. Friends of ours who took the train last year, told us you have to haul your luggage up a couple flights of stairs and there are no porters to assist you at the train station or dock.

We found a very good rate for a private car. Let me know where you are staying in London and if you are intersted in perhaps sharing a ride into London.

Also, is anyone else booked on the transatlantic April 24, 2004 Constellation cruise? Could not find anyone under the roll call listing.

    TravelDiva,

Can you provide more detail on the private car..ie rate and how to contact them?

We are planning to be on the 4/24 sailing of the Constellation as well and are considering spending a few days in London. Our party will be 2 or possibly 4

    Thanks

Did you book airtravel through Celebrity?

We have been told that the ride from Dover to Heathrow is included in our airfare, no matter we won't be flying home until the following Wednesday. Obviously we are on our own to get downtown from the airport.

Double check before you spend extra $$$ for a ride you've already paid for.

We are returning from the Baltic constallation on June 5 and have rented a rental car so we can go up to Heathrow at our lesiure since we have a 6pm flight. t\The cost of an automatic 4 door intermediate with air is 67 pounds. We had this type of car, a Vauhaull vectra last year and it is a very comportable car. There are two of us with lots of luggage and we can get there when we want and so not have to sit for hours at the terminal because we came on a bus or whatever. Best of all, we do not havve tocarry a lot of luggage and hope that it will fit on the bus or train. We rented on line with Alamo.

I notice this thread I started is still alive so I thought you would like to know we did take the train from Dover to London. The porter from the port of Dover took pity on us and got a van to take us to the train station with our luggage. We did not have to climb any stairs but would advise to travel with fewer than four large suitcases and two carry ons as we did. You have a short time to load your luggage when the train stops, and very little help. We did enjoy meeting people on the train. We had a Britrail pass we used every day to travel out from London and found thisa great and inexpensive way to get around.
