Holland America Line’s ms Maasdam Completes Signature of Excellence Upgrades

Three other ships in fleet also receive enhancements

Seattle, Wash., May 26, 2011 — Holland America Line’s ms Maasdam recently completed a stem-to-stern, multimillion-dollar Signature of Excellence dry dock at Freeport, Bahamas, April 24. Also completing dry-dock refurbishments in April were ms Eurodam, ms Volendam and ms Veendam.
The 1,258-guest Maasdam’s added facilities and features included new stateroom furnishings and bathroom upgrades; Canaletto, a complimentary Italian eatery; the sophisticated Showroom at Sea; and the stylish lounge called Mix, which combines three distinct bars into one area. Twenty-nine new Lanai staterooms also were added to Maasdam during the refit, and 16 staterooms across Verandah Suite, Outside and Inside categories were converted into Spa Staterooms. The refurbishment was part of the company’s now more than $566 million Signature of Excellence ongoing fleet-wide program.
“Maasdam is our fifth ship to receive these exciting enhancements,†said Richard Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. “The ongoing Signature of Excellence program has touched all 15 Holland America ships in various ways and ensures that our fleet continues to evolve in premium amenities, programming, technologies and activities that our guests expect from Holland America Line.â€
Volendam’s dry dock in Singapore included new carpet in most of the public areas and restaurants. Audio and lighting enhancements were completed in the show lounge. Guest staterooms received new carpeting and soft goods, and all furniture was re-upholstered and refinished. Crew cabins and recreation areas were also updated. The hull was repainted and a number of technical maintenance repairs were performed.
Eurodam’s dry dock at Freeport involved new carpets, privacy curtains along the Atrium side of the Pinnacle Grill, hull coating and some routine technical upgrades. Veendam’s dry dock, also at Freeport, included routine technical updates. The aft Lido Deck retreat area was modified with a new design with more open deck space, two pools and two hot tubs.
Maasdam Public Areas Upgraded During Dry Dock
Canaletto, a complimentary casual Italian restaurant, was added to ms Maasdam and comes to life for dinner when a section of the Lido is transformed with glass partitions and an Italian ambiance with dishes such as putanesca and penne alla vodka. Although there is no charge to dine in Canaletto, reservations are suggested.

Maasdam’s piano bar and casino bar were reconfigured into Mix, a multi-themed area with three separate bars: Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales, each serving its namesake libations. The casino was redesigned and the main show lounge was transformed into the Showroom at Sea with nightclub ambiance.
The upscale Merabella luxury jewelry shop was added to the completely renovated mid-ship shopping area with its signature jewelry and watch boutiques. Other public areas around the ship also were refurbished and received new carpeting.
In addition to Maasdam, these extensive public area Signature of Excellence enhancements can also be found on Veendam, ms Statendam, ms Rotterdam and ms Ryndam.
Staterooms Receive New Look and New Spa Category Added
Completing the décor enhancements, Maasdam’s staterooms received new carpeting, soft goods and completely renovated bathrooms with new vanities and cabinetry.

Sixteen staterooms near the Greenhouse Spa on Verandah Deck were converted to “spa staterooms†featuring a variety of enhanced amenities. Spa accommodations offer exclusive items such as organic cotton bathrobes and slippers, a yoga mat, a soothing water feature, special room-service menus and treatments, and more.
Signature of Excellence tops $566 Million
The industry-leading Signature of Excellence initiative is an ongoing and comprehensive program that touches every aspect of the Holland America Line experience and the investment now exceeds $566 million. Signature of Excellence features and amenities offer guests more luxurious accommodations, enhanced dining experiences, more enriching activities and exceptional levels of service.

We'll be onboard soon. I'll be checking out the changes, but let me know if there's anything specific you'd like me to photograph and I'll do my best.

We just returned from two weeks on Maasdam and we think she looks great.
We didn't expect to like the new MIX but we actually like it as it is bringing more people out and about in the evening than we have seen on other Maasdam cruises. I don't care for the colors and the decorating is entirely different than the style on rest of Maasdam but it is better use of the space. The bright shop lights at night are a little annoying so I sat with my back to them. The casino is redesigned and I like it much better.

Cabins were (mostly) fresh and new bathrooms. Again, if they had asked my opinion, I might have made some different suggestions but new tiles, floors, counter and sink etc are very welcome. New soft goods were also good to see.

All in all, the ship looks good and the hard work and expense of dry dock paid off for the most part.
