I am looking forward to going on this cruise (Golden in sept) but i just want to laze about sunbathe, eat and drink. Is this so unusual? Everyone says I am mad not to get off the ship and explore. Perhaps i'll do one or two trips but mainly not. How do others feel about this. Am i wasting my holiday? Opinions please.

Entirely up to you.
We've been before and there were folks that lived in the pool on board, never got off. Their loss.

If you're not up for the organized excursions, I might suggest going ashore and walking around town when you are in port. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, and usually the drivers can make suggestions for interesting places to have a light lunch or drink.

Many of the beaches on the ports of call are really really nice, if you just want to bake. Graba taxi in port, your driver will recommend a quiet beach and make arrangements to pick you up in plenty of time to make the ship departure. You won't be disappointed.

If you post your itinerary, folks here could make some beach suggestions for you.

In my opinion, if you stay on board, you'll miss some pretty spectacular scenery.

Bon voyage

Stufus,

If you were going on the Hawaian Island/Tahiti cruise, folks book the round trip strictly for sunbathing. Many of them even live year-round in Honolulu.

Also, if you went to a resort, at most place you'd do sun-type activities--golf, swimming, etc.

Not to worry. Do what you want to do.

I've done both - depending on what I needed at the time. It's your vacation and you should do what you want. Right now lazing around on a ship sounds perfect! Have fun whatever you decide to do.

We stay aboard usually at least one port of call just not up to go go go everyday. Have found a good day for really looking over the ship, visiting the spa at reduced prices and just quiet time to relax. It is your vacation do what you want.

I agree that it is your vacation and what ever you want to do on it you should do or not do :thumb We have been to certain ports several times and so we stay on the ship and by the pool as the 1st poster mentioned they had seen and I don't feel we are losing anything. We really enjoy the quiet time on the ship :wave

I don't think you're mad at all!! If you feel like lazing in the sun and imagining you're on your own private yacht go for it!!!! Should you change your mind you can shift your lazy self :grin and do some exploring! It's your vacation so enjoy it your way!

Personally, I love going into port and seeing new places. There are some experiences out there that are once-in-a-lifetime things. But, I also recongnize that not everyone likes the same things that I do. Its your vacation, its your money that you have spent.... do what ever floats YOUR boat :grin

Absolutely not!!! You are not insane. Some cruises I go on and get off at every port and do excursions.........others I barely get off the ship long enough to buy a souvenier and then return to the ship. Some cruises I never get off - those are my "I need to relax" cruises and I do just that - relax! Neither way is right or wrong - it's just what I need out of a cruise at that particular time.

O f course it is your vacation, so do what you like, but there are some incredilbe beaches to laze on, lounge chairs, bar service, palm trees, ahhhh, .Just take a taxi, soak up some sun for a few hurs and return to the ship for lunch ( when the beaches crowd up) .Spend the rest of the day on your private yacht!!
There are some ports I wouldn't bother with though, Jamaica's are two of them( ochio Rios, and Montego Bay)

Today's ships are as much of a destination as the ports. There's plenty to do (and not do) - and while it's docked, you'll have the run of the place, since most passengers will be off somewhere else. Have no feelings of guilt and enjoy your cruise!

Been on ten cruises and never have been on an over priced excursion. We always do our own thing , sometimes renting a cab for a few hours or just do nothing but hang out on the ship.

Nope as MANY cruisers just go and spend the entire cruise lounging around on the ship. Its your choice as that is the nice thing about cruising. :thumb

Interesting that some think the stay aboard is "their loss".

So many people go ashore, and spend most of their time shopping. And buy things that are imported and only there for the tourists to buy, take home and then store in the attic. Recently did an Alaska cruise and it was amazing how many jewelry stores these little towns had. Fools gold?

In my opinion the Ship is the primary destination-especially in the Caribbean. Ports are secondary for sure.

I love the ship, but,
where I live we do not have crystal clear warm blue water and soft white sand beaches with palm trees .The snorkling is such a treat also, being able to see incredibly colored fish swim right by you!! I never get enough of that.
I agree that it is a waste of time( imho) to go "shopping" for junk. We never do!

The point about the beaches, water, etc makes lots of sense. But, since the vast majority seem to head to the shops, you have to wonder where they live. The bulk of what the shops offer is about the same as the local mall back in the states.
