We are leaving on 11-21-2002 for 4 nite stay in Honolulu, then a 10 nite cruise on the Wind around Hawaii to the Fanning Islands.

I have been reading reviews about the Wind & nobody seems to have anything good to say about NCL or the Wind! IS IT REALLY THAT BAD.
We got a pretty good deal of $1750/person for airfare, 5 days 4 nites in Honolulu, and an outside cabin.
Are we making a BIG mistake, please answer ASAP as we have to pay in full by tomorrow!

    Thank you,
    Earle & Kathy

Hi Earle...sorry, just read your post today...hope you made your final payment...as far as price, I think you did very well...hard to come by a Hawaii cruise AND pre-stay, PLUS airfare, at that rate (we are TA's, so do know what we are talking about)...we were on the Wind about 10 yrs, ago, and really enjoyed it--a little older now...usually do RCI, but were on the Norwegian Sky to Alaska in September, and were very satisfied with everything, even liked the "Freestyle" (although we did do the alternative resturants and they were awesome)...So, if you are heading for Hawaii, have a wonderful stay and happy sailing...Helen

Were booked on the same ship in March, please write a review and fell us how it was. I have been on 11 NCL cruises and always has a good time, and for that price its a real good deal. Have a great cruise.

We have sailed on the NCL Sea and Sky. We found their rates reasonable, their service,
food and entertainment excellent. Loved the free-style dinning. Have another trip planned on the Sky. Sounds to me like the complainers just had a lot of WIND !

  5. My family and I sailed on the Star in July with a group of 11 other people. We spent 2 nights (pre) at the Hilton and had a fantastic time. I know we can't compare the Wind to the Star - but you are going to have a fantastic time. The NCL food is very good as well as the service.

Only cons - the seas are supposedly really rough in the winter months - so be ready for some rocking and rolling - In July we had 7 to 12 ft. seas - it was noticeable - but really very relaxing at night in bed. Hawai'i is one the most beautiful places I have ever been to - I came back a new person - and am heading there again for 2 weeks in July of this year - but not on a cruise.

    Relax and have fun!

    Regards,
    John

    Hi Earle
We are booked on NCL Wind, cruising April 4/03 for 10 days in Hawaii.
Do you have a review of the ship and the cruise?
Heard lots about the sewage smell etc.
How were the shore excursions and do you recommend any not to miss?
How as Honolulu? We also have 2 nights pre-stay.

    Thanks
    C. Curtis

THE "WIND" IS AN OLDER SHIP WITHOUT A LOT OF THE GLITZ AND GLAMOR OF THE BIGGER TACKIER CARNIVAL SHIPS, BUT COMFORTABLE AND MORE THAN ADEQUATE. THERE ARE SOME SIGNS OF AGING AROUND SOME OF THE DECK AREAS BUT TOLERABLE. FOOD, SERVICE AND ENTERTAINMENT ARE ALL VERY GOOD. I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT THE CASINO CAN'T OPERATE ON HAWAIIAN WATERS FOR SOME REASON AND THE WEATHER IS NOT THE BRIGHT SUNNY STUFF THAT YOU GET IN THE CARIBBEAN. IT SEEMS TO BE OVERCAST MOST OF THE TIME AND RAIN IS ALWAYS THREATENED. FANNING ISLAND IS GORGEOUS AS FAR AS BEACHES GO. TAKE THE EXCURSION TO THE SEPARATE BEACH. GORGEOUS BEACH AND WARM WATER. IF THERE IS ANY DISAPPOINTMENT TO BE HAD IT WILL BE WITH SOME OF THE TOURS, ESPECIALLY IN HILO AND NAIWILLIWILLI. MAUI IS O.K BUT TOO PRICEY .

MY APOLOGIES FOR THE UPPER CASE . I WAS TOO FAR INTO THE MEMO TO REDO IT .

    "IS IT REALLY THAT BAD."

No, it's not. We've sailed on Norwegian Wind twice and thoroughly enjoyed the ship.

    Hi again
Can anyone tell me what NCL supplies in the bathrooms on the Wind?
i.e. shampoo, soap, body lotion etc.
Also, are there safes in the room?

    Thanks

There is only a dispenser in the shower stall containing liquid soap and shampoo which is not very good. You would be wise to take that type of thing with you or you will be buying it on board. There is a safe in the closet of the stateroom. There is also a wall mounted hair dryer in the washroom. We had to provide a bar of hand soap also. Oh well, better they cut some costs in this area rather than in the dining room. The food made up for the lack of toiletteries.

Which shore excursions did you take on each island and which ones do you think were a waste of time and money?
Did you book anything on your own on any of the islands?
Is it cheaper that way and do you get to see more or do you miss highlights?

    thanks

Re: Is NCL & the Wind as bad as every says

This information is based on our 11 day cruise that sails on Mondays..............
The shore excursions are a crap shoot at times. We did some sight seeing on our own but we also took one of the Volcanic National Park tours. Interesting enough and probably necessary to ensure you see everything and not get lost. You won't see any flowing lava though, only the colled lava flows and craters. There are a number of steam vents visible. The only way to see the lava flow short of taking an expensive helicopter tour is to get up at 3:00 am as the ship passes a flow visible from the ocean. On the way back the bus trundles you through a macadamia nut factory/store and also an orchid growing operation/store which may or may not interest you. Fanning Island is beautiful and unspoiled (take the $10 trip to the further part of the island. It is only a few minutes by tender and worth the extra few dollars). The 2 hour Kanakapila sunset sail at Lahaina is pretty good. You should get to see dolphins, maybe some whales and tiger sharks, etc.
The beachs are good here also. I wasn't impressed with the Wailua River tour although you do get to see the Fern Grotto and wedding site in the grotto. I guess it might be ok if you are into scenery and a ride up a river on a big tender type of barge. The Pearl Harbor and Honolulu historic tour is good as you are able to get out to the Arizona memorial however the city tour is fairly short with no opportunity to get off the bus to take a few pictures. The Pearl Harbor portion of the tour can be very crowded as well. We took a taxi in Lahaina to the Whalers Village. Nice beach, restaurants, and shops. It is a very modern mall so don't let the name fool you. We accomplished much the same thing here as the beach tour offered on the ship. Hope this helps....have a great trip.
