Le Havre to Honfleur

How easy is it to get to Honfleur from the dock at Le Havre without going on a shore excursion? We spent three days last year in Honfleur and we are looking forward to spending a relaxing day there instead of running in to Paris. From the map it looks close but there happens to be a lot of water in the way! Don't remember seeing any ferries or such there. Does that new modern bridge connect the two places?

The bridge is named Le Pont de Normandie and connects the two cities.

Thank you, Ship Maven.

Now I need to know how to get over this bridge into Honfleur for the day.

I would say that your best bet is either to rent a car (gas is VERY expensive, though, as you probably know) or hire a taxi, agreeing on the fare in advance.

Thanks again. We are thinking about renting a car. But would rather find someone to do the driving for us. Thanks also for the link.

Have you been to Honfleur; it is a great place with fantastic restaurants and outdoor cafés.

Thomas - yes, I was in Honfleur ten years ago when I was on one of the ships taking part in the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Although I didn't do much sightseeing in the port, I really loved it and would definitely head that way again if I were on a cruise calling at Le Havre or Honfleur. I was on Crystal Harmony at the time, and we shared Honfleur with Statendam.

Although I haven't been there in recent years, most of my experience with Normandy ports was with Cherbourg.

Found a site: LeHavre Taxi that offers a pick-up at the dock and then a ride thru the Normandy countryside to Honfleur with two hours there and then back to the dock via the Normandy bridge. Will look into that.

Thomas,

Last year we docked at Le Havre and caught a taxi to Honfleur with another couple from the ship. We were able to just get a taxi as we came off the ship. He took us to Honfleur and left us there for 5 hours (we told him a time to return) so we were able to enjoy the lovely town and have a great lunch there as well.

He returned right on time and we paid him when we arrived back at the ship. I think each couple paid 50Euros. We had a lovely day.

We will be visiting Le Havre in Sept aboard the Constellation. We have been to Paris a number of times, and are not interested in spending most of the day in a train. We had intended having a quiet day in Le Havre doing a little sight seeing, shopping and sampling the local cuisine. Couldn't find much tourist information about Le Havre, but does the city have much of interest that we could enjoy for an afternoon?

We spent two days in Honfleur last year and can't wait to go back!
It is a very picturesque town on a quay...many artists and wonder scenes to photograph or paint. Wonderful restaurants on the water...try the mussels in cream broth for a special treat. There's an open air tram that leaves from an area near the double-decker carousel that will take you for a ride through Honfleur, into the surrounding hills, down to the beach...it's delightful. I think you'll find that half a day is not enough!
Enjoy!

We rent a car and visited Honfleur, Deauville (hotel Normandy) and Trouville, Fécamp and a lot of small villages. We got a great lunch with seafood.
We got a great time.

Gitte - with the cities you mentioned, it sounds like you were following the novels of Gustave Flaubert, who spoke so much of those seaside towns!

Thomas,
When is your cruise?
We are docking there on September 8 and trying to do the same thing that you are. But we don't want the taxi tour with the limited time in Honfleur. We've contacted a lot of people and not had any luck. We did have one man, but he "dropped" us for a larger group without giving us a chance to add more people to our 4!

I wonder how hard it could be to walk to the bus station and take the bus to Honfleur? Has anyone any info about this? I have heard it is less than 30 minutes between Le Havre and Honfleur. We want to just walk around, sit and watch, have a leisurely lunch etc.

I have tried to find a bus schedule but it's in French and hard for me to decipher.

I'd appreciate any help!

We are no longer going on this cruise; at least in the immediate future. Thanks to everyone that posted info.

Hope you all make it to Honfleur. This was one of our favorite spots in France. I will keep reading the board and hopefully in the not too far future will put that cruise back into our plans.

Please let me know how everything turns out. We shall need a taxi from Le Havre to Honfleur on June 21, 2005 when the Jewel of the Seas docks in Le Havre.
