On another board, I noticed someone mentioned mayflies in Alaska in May? Are they really a problem? Do they sting? If so, how do you protect yourself?

We saw no mayflies while in Alaska last year in May but I am familiar with them near the Missouri River. They do not bite, in fact, have no mouth so only live a very short time.
They can be annoying if there are a lot of them but they just sit on you and you brush them off. Don't know if repellent is effective or not.

thank you so much for your response - on another board they made them out to be something to avoid, so now I can rest easy!!
