I have put off posting here while I dedided what I wanted to say.

First of all, Richard you did us a favor. This thread got people posting, and defending, and that is a good thing. Proves right there the board is hale and hearty.

I am guilty of being one of the ones who posts OT often. The reason? I have only been on one cruise, band I don't have a lot of cruising knowlege to share. (I do have SOME tho). Since I was forced into early retirement on permanent disability, I may never get to cruise again for medical and financial reasons. So, if I can't physically cruise, the next best thing is coming here to listen to other's experiences and plans. If I ever do get to go again, I have learned a lot that will make the experience richer.

Outside of cruising, I do have some things to share, which I hope are appreciated. (thank you Lizardstew for the Walgreens photo reference, glad I have done something to help someone.)

I love having people to share my photos with. And silly jokes and even stupid questions that have nothing to do with cruising. One thing I have learned is that no matter what you ask, @ddicts are ready and willing to give opinions and advise and experiences. Does that make this a bad board? Not in my opinion. If it is in anyone else's opinion, well there seem to be lots of other boards you will fit in well with. In the meantime, you are welcome here. jMho cc
Change is a thing that we ALL must face and with change comes resistance. I will use a good example for moi here. I personally do NOT agree with the Float to the Top option for the Community Forum. I believe personally that this option is Gr8 for slower forums and worx well.

However for busier forums this option tends to filter posts to the bottom and the back pages to quickly. It also tends to limit posting as well. Its does that because many posting members rather than drag and old thread to the top will PM a person to respond to that older post rather than posting on the tread itself.

So rather than post on an older thread and bring it to the top to share the info with the entire community they limit the sharing of the info via a PM. It also reduces the # of postings on the site and therefore gives the image that the forums are slowing down.

Thirdly the Float to the Top option also tends to confuse things and create MORE work IMO where there are Daily post of the same topic. It requires readers to look at dates to make sure they are posting to todays office ramble or Good Morning post rather than last weeks.

Confusion enters as well when a old post from weeks or months ago is brought to the TOP because it requires rereading the post to make sure that a duplicate posting is NOT posted. These opinions being stated might raise some eyebrows but I also know that they will be accepted.
Jim, I agree with you 1,000% on each point you made about the DREADFUL Float to the Top!!! HATE IT and feel that it has diminshed my pleasure on the community board and the traffic. It's just too difficult to keep track of the threads. JMHO!

Einstein - I couldn't agree more about float-to-the-top. I never liked it from Day One. As I stated previously, the topics are too diverse on this Forum for it to be effective.

As for daily topics, yes it IS difficult to know the day/date. That's why I've gone to stating the day of the week on my nightly weather reports.

Cindy - from your mouth to God's ears that we have no more cancer fears!

Oooohhhh...we're going off topic (again :grin)!

I want to add my "I hate the float to the top" on this particular forum once again. I am never, never, never going to get used to it and I know I'm missing loads of stuff!!

I've been a member since John created this site in 1999. Our 2nd cruise was Grand Princess Eastern Caribbean in December 1999. I posted several questions to the folks on this board from my home in NW Connecticut and then again in January 2001 for our Panama Canal cruise to which I received excellent advise. We moved to NE OH in 2003 and because of health reasons - haven't thought of cruising until now (I had to re-enter C@ because I couldn't remember my username LOL!!!) - but we're getting ready to book a Southern caribbean cruise January 2008. so of course, I'm back to learn from these fine people.

Though recent situations in my life took me away from this site - I was still promoting it to everyone I met who mentioned cruising. I knew that they would get the answers to any questions on cruising or travel in general; while receiving support if life's crushing realities touched them - and they felt comfortable enough to share with the group. And though I have been away, when I re-entered and saw that ShipMaven and Redstripe were still here - I felt as if I just came home.

So I guess what I'm saying is - congratulations & thanks Cruise@ddicts - for 8 years of providing information, fun, and humanity to all who enter.

God bless all
Laurel

I want to get my two cents in. I haven't been here as long as a lot of @ddicts but this is were I come every day that I can to catch up on the ups and downs of this great bunch of friends. I love the pictures that are posted, the jokes, the questions whether about cruising, or cars, or whatever. I have only been on two cruises but I got all my advise here. When I got on the cruise ship the first time I felt like I knew what was going on right away thanks to my @ddict friends. May this board live long and prosper.

I agree with some of what Richard said. I think things have "felt" different here lately...but I've attributed it to when the system crashed and we lost so much information. It takes time and patience to rebuild all of that. And eventually the site will have the wealth of information it has had in the past.(John and the others have been working so hard on all of this...and it is greatly appreciated.)

As far as E's post...there have been times I haven't posted my thoughts or what I knew because the post was a day or so old and I knew it would take the post back to the top. What I had to say wasn't of great importance...just something that had I seen the post the day it was made I would have put in my two cents.

However, like many others, I do not believe this board is dying. There is a core of people here that is unlike what you find on any of the other cruising boards. No matter whether you wander to other boards or just can't handle talking about cruising because you aren't booked....you can always return here when you are ready and you are welcomed with open arms. I appreciate the feeling of "family" this board gives us.

Oh no .. I'm reading and responding to another off topic non cruising subject. not again!!.

thks Richard. You raise some good points,

Some interesting thoughts by many others thanks to you also.

We are a family and named appropriately.

I do wish you all would get over onto the X and Ak. board more though ;)

Well, I've posted very little this summer because I've been just too busy but I try to peak in for a minute or so every day & upon seeing this topic I just had to take the time to post. Yes, the board has changed over the yrs but for anyone looking for cruise info it is still here. Any questions I have asked about cruising have always been answered promptly. But I have also used this board when I've experienced tough personal times. One of my 1st posts was a day when I was feeling terribly sad as I was experiencing that "empty nest" syndrome when my last son went away to college (he has been an engineer now for 3 yrs!), and last fall my other son suffered a fractured neck in an ATV accident (he is now fully recovered), and right now my DH is facing some serious medical issues & it is a frightening time for us. I guess what I am saying is that all of us here are addicted to cruising & all of us are willing to talk & answer questions on cruising at any time but we have also become a group of people that are comfortable enough in our "home" here to discuss other issues. The 1 change that I don't like is the float to the top business but I can live with it. I do appreciate the time & effort that our moderator puts into the site & I appreciate the people that are here to answer my cruise questions or to wrap an arm around me if I going thru a tough time as I am right now.

Agree 100% about your 'system crashed and we lost so much information' comment.
My two cents from a long term member and reader, however a rare poster here at C@.
I find I get 'burnt out' reading posts that I do not have interest in. By the time I find a post that someone asks a good question that needs answered, someone else has already given a great answer. Thus, there is very little reason for me to chime in.
Although as stated above, I rarely contribute, I try to stick to the Princess board and help when I can. I've been on 13 cruises, however 9 have been on Princess and that is where I feel I can contribute from my cruise experience.
Really enjoyed reading E's reply above concerning 'venture out and discuss more cruising related topics'. That would be a great help for everyone.
The part I miss the most are the years I spent in the chat room almost every night. Great chance to chat with many individuals here and when some one popped in with a question, they received a correct answer. immediately.

Richard-
I was once an active participant on this board.... I have become a 'sometime' Lurker here, and active on a smaller, more intimate cruise board. I cannot agree with you more; Cruise @ddicts, like Topsy, just growed until it got too large and impersonal! It's not easy to navigate; difficult to find what you're looking for...

17. I am Grandeur Sailer and I am a Cruise Addict!! Oh sorry thats the Alcholics Annonymous thing. But anyway Richard has done something for all of us by trying to start a fight. He has brought a close family even closer. As many people have said in this post the more "critical" boards are not as family oriented as this one. I was a lurker in those boards before I found cruise addicts. We see how that went over with me since I have been a member here for almost 3 years now with over 250 posts. I say family is what counts and we will still strive to provide the best advice and gossip out there.

Wow that was alot of typing. Whewwwww.

Change in anything doesn't mean death...it means different, a new beginning and can be a great improvement. We have so much more to offer on Cruise Addicts since it began and has grown since, in a very positive way. To be honest, some of the people that have agreed with Richard had not been very active on this board anyway.

Well this has turned into quite the thread! While I agree with much of what has been said I sort of feel like Richard is having a little fun with us. It feels like he set us in motion, and now is sitting back and enjoying the show. It's great to see everyone run to the defense of cruise-@ddicts, but why should we? This site is exactly what we want it to be.

Now - Having said that I will join the fray anyway -

Richard is correct in that this board will someday cease to exist, but in my estimation it may take 50 or more years before it happens. :dance This board is alive and well, and I don't see it going anywhere soon. :thumb

Personally, I disappeared from the board for awhile and while I tried to convince myself it was because "life happens" I think it really had more to do with me not having a cruise booked - and worse - nothing on the horizon! ::eek:

Well now I have a cruise booked and I am back to posting. If this board is not about cruising why would I subconsciously stay away when I had nothing booked? Well maybe its because the board IS about cruising and its members are those looking for a place to be in between bookings. The underlying theme is always about cruising even if every other post is about something else. Its a well schooled cruising community just waiting for its wealth of information to be tapped. When a question is asked it is usually answered in a very short period of time along with a few people who just leave well wishes.

If this is not a cruise board then why is the Bon Voyage post so long every week?

If this is not a cruise board then why do a number of travel agents who are cruise specialists frequent the board - as members, not sales people?

If this is not a cruise board then how do you explain the group cruises that seem to come one after another?

Name another cruise board that features "E" tours? :thumb

I could go on but I won't. This board is not just about cruise facts and information. It is full of people that live to cruise, and so what if we talk about everything else under the sun. Cruising is what brought us here, and cruising is why we come back. Look at the signature lines of many of the frequent posters here and I think the @ddiction is evident.
