Hi all, I would like to plan a cruise from Galveston but I am not sure where to fly? There are a couple airports in Houston. Any help would work for me

While Hobby (HOU) is closer by about 20 minutes; you might find it easier to "fly into" Bush Int'l (IAH). Many more airline choices there. In most cases, prices comparable.

Are you from the area or have you experienced the distance from the two airports firsthand? I ask because I'm reading conflicting information here and there about the distance of these airports to Galveston. Planning freak that I am, I'm only interested in personal experiences. A Conquest cruise is also on my pending list for Oct06.

Thanks in advance for your response.

    Enjoy the day! :daisy

I'm getting that information second hand...from someone who lives in the Houston area. While, in some cases it's up to 40 minutes closer, I used the lower figure to account for possible traffic snarls.

I would absolutely use Hobby if you are able to. The time difference could be ENOURMOUS (I-45 traffic is dreadful). I would say the time difference could be over 1 hour.

If you can fly into Hobby, do it. IAH (Bush) is on the other side of the city and with the traffic problems in Houston, if you can avoid that drive, do so!

When we were on the Conquest this past October we flew into Hobby. This is much closer to the port than Bush. IT was still a good 45 min. drive. We rented a van to take us in. 80$ each way for two. Expensive. Given the situation Galveston was not equipped to handle large cruise ships coming in and out. The fact that the airports are so far away is a definte minus. But the Conquest more than made up for the expense and the time. We thought the Conquest was the BEST ship we had been on so far. The only bad experience we had was getting off the ship. We loved Galveston as well. We stayed at the LaQuinta on the seawall.

To all-I appreciate the info. Thanks for posing the question, pnorth!!

Consensus (here and there) is one hour's difference between HOU and IAH to Galveston so I'll go with my first thoughts and choose Hobby. I realize flight times are not as expansive as IAH but I dislike 'road travel' so less of that and I can 'stand' more airport terminal time (sitting in a vehicle vs sitting in bars, restaurants, etc). :grin

    Enjoy the evening, all.

I'm glad I found this thread. My husband and I are sailing out of Galveston Oct 06 on the Conquest. I know nothing about Texas except it's big. We would fly in a day or two before sailing. I hate rushing. Any advice on good hotels? We might as well see a little of Galveston while we're there. Also, how do you all like the Conquest? We've only sailed on RCI/Explorer of the seas.
