PH8, I could not agree with you more!

My comment was not intended to stiffle the argument, simply to keep any venom below the surface, or, off the keyboard!

Of course it is a lousy habit. But I, for one, will not get rightous. Politicians rant about smokers but will not ban it only tax it.

Some say it is a stretch, but once people begin stepping into the lives of others, we start a dangerous trend....anyone notice how one state is looking to BAN "fat people" from fast food restaurants? How cities are enforcing what a restaurant can and cannot serve?

For those that say, "Hey, it is for their own good" be careful....freedom of choice is precious, but it is also fragile when you begin letting others decide which Freedoms you can have.

Next it will be no drinking, since it might promote alcoholism, then no perfume, due to all the allergies on board, then no dancing, due to lawsuits from falling. I am not a fan of legislating behavior.

Give me one good reason someone with a veranda shouldn't be able to smoke outside.

Give me one good reason why they can't have make half the lounges smoking.

People have smoking for hundreds of years....babies were born to smoking mothers, grew up just fine, and had more babies. No one is going to die from a fellow passenger smoking 20 feet away. Second hand smoke danger is something that one must be subjected to over an extended period of time, like living with a chain smoker. You do more damage to your lungs inhaling your neighbor's fireplace smoke in the winter time who is burning treated wood, and the fumes blow all over the neighborhood.

Just another example of what an intolerant society we've become.

I am a considerate smoker, have no issues being "banned" from dining areas, etc. But a BAR? Gimme a break. A private OUTSIDE veranda? Again, gimme a break. We're all so "health conscious" that we rant over smokers, and then consume thousands of chemicals every day in our food, water and air. Ignorance reins.

"House Bill 282 was introduced in the 2008 Mississippi legislative session on Friday by Representative W.T. Mayhall, Jr., a retired pharmaceutical salesman with DuPont-Merk. "

DUH....who just happens to be heavily paid off by the billion dollar pharaceutical industry that markets weight loss pills. Isn't Mississippi known for having a population with one of the highest IQ's in the country, along side Tampa? (Best known for having the finest medical facilities and infrastructure). Only in MS would such behavioral legislation be brought before it's people, who apparently never read our Constitution.

Let's ban all children on aircraft, DEFINITELY on cruises (who wants to hear your screaming brats). Or better yet, let's just nip the problem in the bud, and not allow breeding without intelligence and parenting screenings. Can we ban wearing K-Mart dresses to formal nights too?

As I said, ignorance reins. Or maybe I should state that more plainly. Never overestimate the intelligence of the public.

Live and let live - or die, if you believe such. It's not your life, it's theirs. And again, no one ever died from being "subjected" to a smoker on the other side of the room. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, every adult who smoked when it was perfectly acceptable....yeah, they all died young. It was all that drinking and smoking that did it, I think.
