  • I was lucky enough to be one of the 2,000 chosen few in Southampton this week to watch the naming of Cunard’s new ship Queen Victoria.

    Whether or not you approve of Cunard’s decision to ask the Duchess of Cornwall to do the honours – as I have noted before, I do; she is a member of the Family and has every right to take part in such engagements – there was no denying this was a spectacular occasion.

    My heart sank when I read it would last an hour – I’ve been to some pretty awful naming ceremonies in my time – but the 60 minutes zipped by, buoyed up by Sir Derek Jacobi at his thespian best and a lot of last-night-of-the-Proms-type flag-waving during a stirring rendition of Rule Britannia....
