The Queen says a fond farewell as QE2 sails into history

The Queen is to say an emotional farewell to the QE2, more than 40 years after she launched the world's fastest merchant ship.

During the QE2's service for the Cunard Line, the vessel has sailed more than 5.5 million nautical miles, carried 2½ million guests, completed 25 full world cruises and crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times.

The Queen launched it in 1967 and was last on board, with the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1990. All of their children, the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales, visited the QE2 at different times.

Tomorrow, the Queen will visit for the last time at a reception for 300 guests including Baroness Thatcher, and will meet nine former QE2 captains. Royal aides said the Queen had a great affection for the ship, which displaces 70,327 tons, can carry 1,791 passengers and 1,000 crew, and was built at the John Brown shipyard on the Clyde...
