LOS ANGELES - Carnival Cruise Lines was sued in Florida Thursday by the family of an aspiring actress, 24, from Los Angeles who died on one of its ships.
The lawsuit filing was announced during a news conference at the Los Angeles office of attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing Ashley Barnett's parents.
Barnett boarded a Carnival ship with her boyfriend last Oct. 14, headed to Ensenada, Mexico, to celebrate her upcoming 25th birthday.
The next day, Barnett died from "the toxic effects of methadone," which is often used to treat drug withdrawal and dependence, though her friends and family say she was "strongly anti-drug," Allred said.
The family claims Carnival handled the situation irresponsibly, and provided a defibrillator more than 30 minutes after a 911 call was placed....
